SPATIAL SCALE STUDY _ CAA

How do people perceive and experience the notion of the enormous or the intimate in scale? How can these be defined? Each Spatial Scale Study tries to create a relationship between the body and space on a different scale. Spatial Scale Study No.3 has the ambition to push the project out of the interior and enlarge it to an architectural scale. This pyramid-like shape keeps the weight in the center and helps to reduce the foundation size. Spatial Scale Study No.3 is built using 3″ x 3″ cedar posts. The shape begins with a 4′ x 4′ base that tapers up to a 2′ twisting arch. The overall height is 30′ (about as tall as a three-story building). The combination of the narrow 4′ width and the towering 30′ height provokes one’s perception of the intimate and the enormous at the same time, creating an extreme spatial quality.
